A newly adopted Plasmacluster Ion® Shower system releases large quantities of Plasmacluster Ions into the cold air each time the doors are opened and closed. These ions surround airborne bacteria and microorganisms adhering to the inside of the refrigerator and decompose and remove them through a chemical reaction. This has made it possible to control not only airborne bacteria, but also, for example, the growth of bacteria attached to the pouring spouts of beverage cartons.
Sharp also pursued features to keep the inside of the refrigerator clean such as applying an Ag+ (silver) ion treatment to the surfaces of the vegetable compartment to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Sharp strived not only to achieve a clean, sanitary environment inside the refrigerator, but also worked to improve features to preserve freshness, including Mist Cooling that reduces food waste by preventing food from drying out while protecting freshness, and Moist 'n Fresh Storage Compartments that preserve the moist freshness of vegetables even when they are not wrapped. These models were introduced as "eco-refrigerators" that will reduce the waste of food items that would have been discarded because of loss of freshness.
