Sales and Operating Income by Product Group
Sales by product group include internal sales between segments (Consumer/Information Products and Electronic Components).
Consumer/Information Products
Sales of Audio-Visual and Communication Equipment in fiscal 2011 were 1,061.0 billion yen, down 25.6% compared to the previous year, and the operating loss was 6.1 billion yen.
The LCD TV strategy of focusing on sales of models 60 inches and larger was successful, and firm growth was seen in the U.S. market. However, there was a reduction in total sales, due mainly to a rapid decline in demand in Japan, a slowing market in China, and the impact of a fall in unit prices.
In mobile phones as well, sales fell below those of the previous year, due mainly to intensified competition in the market.
Sales of Health and Environmental Equipment in fiscal 2011 were 292.3 billion yen, up 8.3%, and operating income was 29.4 billion yen, up 47.6% compared to the previous year. Sales of LED lights and air purifiers remained strong, reflecting growing demand for energy-efficient and health-conscious home appliances.
Sales of Information Equipment in fiscal 2011 were 277.6 billion yen, up 1.3% and operating income was 27.7 billion yen, an increase of 49.5%, compared to the previous year, due partly to healthy growth in sales of digital color MFPs.
As a result, sales of these three product groups comprising Consumer/Information Products were 1,630.9 billion yen, down 17.2%, and operating income was 51.0 billion yen, down 35.6%, compared to the previous year.
Electronic Components
Sales of LCDs in fiscal 2011 were 720.9 billion yen, down 29.8% from the previous year. This was due to a worsening global market environment that forced Sharp to adjust production of large-size LCDs in the first and fourth quarters, despite the robust sales of LCDs for mobile terminals. As a result of the decrease in sales, an inventory write-down and other factors, LCDs recorded an operating loss of 42.2 billion yen.
Sales of Solar Cells in fiscal 2011 were 223.9 billion yen, down 15.7%, with an operating loss of 21.9 billion yen. This was due mainly to sluggish demand worldwide and ongoing price decline arising from intensified competition.
Sales of Other Electronic Devices in fiscal 2011 were 238.1 billion yen, down 8.9%, and operating income was 9.5 billion yen, down 17.5%, both compared to the previous year. Sales declined for devices used in digital products such as LCD TVs.
As a result, sales of these three product groups comprising Electronic Components were 1,183.0 billion yen, down 23.9% compared to the previous year, and an operating loss of 54.6 billion yen was posted.
