Sharp to Start Worldwide Initiative for Supporting Biodiversity

Sharp Corporation will be carrying out a worldwide initiative to plant trees and tend forests in support of the United Nations’ International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22. Sharp has set its sights on becoming an “eco-positive company,” and this initiative is one example of the company’s wide-ranging efforts to contribute to environmental protection.

In Japan, the Sharp Green Club (SGC)*1 will lead SGC Green Wave 2010, an event to take place on International Day for Biological Diversity in the 11 Sharp Forests*2 located across the country between Hokkaido and Kyushu. Sharp employees will plant trees, tend forests, and survey wildlife according to the particular characteristics of each Sharp Forest.

At Sharp subsidiaries outside Japan, International Day for Biological Diversity will mark the start of employee activities such as planting trees, tending forests, and protecting the habitat of wild birds. Subsidiaries will also increase employees’ biodiversity awareness and understanding with activities including lectures by local environmental protection groups. Such activities will take place in all 26 countries and regions where Sharp has its subsidiaries.

Sharp remains dedicated to contributing to society through efforts that include protecting biodiversity on a global scale.

*1 Established in June 2003, the Sharp Green Club is a joint management-labor organization that plans and manages community-based environmental volunteer activities.
*2 The concept of the Sharp Forest is to “deepen understanding of the connection and bonds between forests, wildlife, and human-beings in order to foster in people a caring and nurturing attitude towards nature.” This concept is the basis for activities in which Sharp employees work with local communities to plant trees, tend forests, and do other such environmental volunteer activities.
